Medupi? Where will our power come from? | What on earth?
"It's bad on that site," said an engineer on Tuesday (25 January). The workers blocked the roads to Medupi and no one can go to work. It now holds all of two weeks so on. And Medupi's first of six units would end last year (in December 2012) was the first to force the beginning, but then impose a strike that paralyzed. Construction is apparently delayed by six months. And now here again in a strike. This time workers apparently dissatisfied with Thai welders and other tradesmen "imported" to work at Medupi. Apparently especially the workers who build the Hitachi boilers and those with the erection of the turbines mov (Alstom) to do with that strike. The word Medupi is a Sesotho word meaning "the rain that consumed by land awkwardly to bring economic mov relief". But Medupi will for many years yet haunting us. Firstly, because mov South Africa of the car fell off that his energy resource. While the rest of the world moves away from coal, we invest in Medupi and Kusile. I went to look at the two baobabs that shift and at the entrance to Medupi mov transplanted. Their growth will have to be watched. In this stage of life they have. More baobabs is apparently to a nursery at the Matimba power station (a stone's throw from Medupi mov off) brought. Medupi is built for 50years power (4 800MW) to provide mov South Africa. Imagine what the carbon footprint of the construction work: * with the concrete used, four Green Point stadium to be built; * More steel than in the world's tallest building, Burj Dubai, is used for Medupi; * As Medupi completion, the total distance trucks will drive to download building materials at the site, be equal to 20 times the circumference of the earth. mov * Medupi will daily use of water can fill 15 Olympic swimming pools; * The coal power station will use daily will fill 20 Olympic swimming pools.
